Deep, dark and decidedly simple, this Kawasaki S1 Custom by Twinline is what a cafe racer should be. The S1 itself is a rare find in the U.S., a bike known for its friendliness to tweaking with 3-digit speeds as a result. Builder Ian Halcott took a less-is-more approach to this Kawasaki custom, putting together a cafe racer classic with no frills, no accents, just a black bike that mirrors the pavement it puts in its wake. Minus K House by Kuu Architecture

The Minus K House is built around a series of 9-foot cubes. On the outside, the Nanhui, China home looks boxy and fragmented. Inside, however, staggered walls cascade and open upon each other, spiraling outward from a central dining table pivot point. The home, designed by Shanghai firm architectural firm Kuu, was built around two living spaces: a workweek residence and a weekend retreat. The four corners of the central table are divided by two kitchens and a pair of courtyards. The demise of the manual transmission has been greatly exaggerated for years now, and continues to be, even as carmakers like Porsche tack on a seventh gear and Nissan sells its SynchroRev match system. At Lamborghini, however, the manual transmission appears to be done, with automated manuals, like the new ISR pictured below, the only offerings. But will anyone really care?

The news comes from an interview at Motor Trend with Maurizio Reggiani, head of R&D for Lamborghini, who characterizes the manual transmission as a disconnect in the otherwise electronic chain of command that "harmonizes absolutely everything that happens between the engine combustion chamber and the tire contact patch." Introducing the human error element means the system will never function as well as it could. That makes perfect sense, but what about the enjoyment drivers extract from handling the gears themselves?

That is unlikely to matter to any Lamborghini owners. As Motor Trend senior editor Jonny Lieberman noted on his Facebook page, "I asked a guy at Lambo Beverly Hills once how many manual Murcielagos they'd sold over ever. Answer: 1." That's right--over the whole model run of the Murcielago, the dealership sold just one with a manual transmission.

Given the speed and precision of the modern robotized manuals and dual-clutches out there, it's clear that the manual transmission is no longer the best solution for ultimate performance. All that stands in the way of the stick shift's complete elimination is the "purist" enthusiast who refuses to let go of that element of skill and control, or who simply enjoys the process. But that must be weighed against the overall experience of the car, taken through the lens of the manufacturer, and against real-world performance.

We understand the desire to drive a manual, but we can't say we're sad to see it go at Lamborghini--the bulls will still rage as hard as ever, perhaps even more so, as they continue to push the envelope of materials, performance, and technology as in the new Aventador.

1955 Ferrari 750 Monza Spider

Alfa Romeo had chalked up quite a Formula One streak by the time 1950 rolled around, so much so that race attendance was falling due to the lack of real competition. The rules for the 1954 race were changed in 1951, dropping supercharged engines to 750 cc from 1.5 liters and naturally aspirated engines down to 2.5 liters from 4.5.

Famed Ferrari engineer Aurelio Lampredi offered up a four-cylinder DOHC engine, the 625 S, which was seen in the 500 F2. The engine was later upgraded to the three-liter Tipo 735 S, which begat the bigger bore 750. The new power plant had a wide-angle 80-degree head, bigger valves and giant 58 DCOA/3 Weber carbs. The new engine was stuffed inside a widened Tipo 501 GP body and made its debut at 1954′s Monza Supercortemaggiore 100-km race.

You know a car performs well when it’s named after its race debut.

Only 35 of the 750 Monza spiders were built, and the model currently up for auction is the eighth in the series. This matching-numbers example debuted at the Brussels Motor Show in 1955, but was made most famous for its service off the track in Hollywood, where it was featured in the 1959 film “On the Beach,” starring Gregory Peck, Fred Astaire and Ava Gardner.
